![]() ![]() It was an eye opening day, I drank beer and smoked little funny cigarettes that were passed to me. But it was the kind that when I accidently locked the keys in it, I could crawl through a hole in the floor board to get in and unlock the car. ![]() I've never come down from 7/31/73 and thank god.įorty year ago this month my older brother Donald took his 14 year old brother and 17 year old sister to our first Grateful Dead concert. Do you remember what Garcia looked like when he busted loose for the Truckin' climax? This was the best show ever for me I saw lots of 'em starting in '69 til the end ('73 was the best year though, duh!). We knew right away from the rare and explosive R.O.R opener this was a big night, and we immediately made our way from the center field seats right up to about 15 yds from the stage. To me, every single tune is a gem performance with many best evers. The best thing is that for the 30 min, incredible Playin', everyone chilled for the Bitches Brew-esque jam and you can hear all the subtlties no problem. What's interesting is, as you say, it was one of the most energetic auds I've ever been a part of - but not just noisy - EVERYONE was LIT! the PERFECT group hand clapping is an instrument on this recording and although loud, its totally in the groove (like the aud tape for 9/7/73 which contains the greatest Eyes ever IMHO, but you probably already know that). himself told me the SB for this night didn't survive in the vault before he upgraded the storage conditions. Nice review too bad you lost your tape b/c in some ways it sounds better but lucky to have Jerry (Moore's) as well b/c Dick L. Hey man - I was there too, and the next night as well, BUT 7/31 was THE night.
